A new, bespoke static site generator to replace Jekyll (opens on the source site)
My blog began as a blosxom (Perl) site running on a VPS. In 2011 I moved to the new GitHub Pages, with the site generated statically by Jekyll (Ruby) on a GitHub server. It was a no-brainer: easier, faster, and cheaper, better in every way. After 15 years of Jekyll, this week I replaced it with a new, custom-built static site generator, dubbed ssg, in “C with templates” C++20. The ~8KLoC source closely follows my personal coding style including templated arenas and slices, zero dependencies, and a libc-free core. It’s wicked fast, and a complete, cold generation of my blog takes 150ms on my…

Server Monitoring in the age of AI: What static thresholds miss and how adaptive monitoring fixes it? (opens on the source site)
Why static CPU and memory thresholds cause alert fatigue, and how adaptive monitoring with machine learning baselines fixes false positives and missed outages. Continue reading Server Monitoring in the age of AI: What static thresholds miss and how adaptive monitoring fixes it? on SitePoint.
Secure Compute and Static IP builds start 64% faster (opens on the source site)
Vercel ·
Builds using Secure Compute or Static IPs now start 64% faster, with the average time from deployment creation to build start dropping from 6.7 seconds to 2.4 seconds. Previously, each build waited for a new build container to boot with its network configuration. These builds now use prewarmed build containers, with your network configuration attached when the build starts. The improvement is applied automatically to builds using Secure Compute or Static IPs, with no configuration changes required. Learn more about Secure Compute and Static IPs.
FastAPI frontends and static files served from the CDN (opens on the source site)
Vercel ·
FastAPI frontends and static files, served with app.frontend() or StaticFiles, are now promoted to the Vercel CDN at build time. Requests for those paths are served directly from the CDN, without invoking your Vercel Function. app = FastAPI() app.frontend("/", directory="dist") app.mount("/assets", StaticFiles(directory="assets"), name="assets") Frontend and StaticFiles, both promoted to the CDN. FastAPI evaluates routes in declaration order. A route declared before a StaticFiles mount takes priority over any CDN file at that path. This precedence is preserved.…

We must free ourselves of the hope that the sea will ever rest.We must learn to sail in high winds.-Aristotle OnassisThe coding agents revolution is taking the world by storm and we are right in the middle of it. Like most of you, we have experimented with the agent's amazing (and frustrating) capabilities, pondering the role of Red and our vision in that new world. The conclusion is (un)surprisingly clear, Red is still very relevant and will be even more so as we improve it to better work with agents. In the meantime, here are some treats, starting with expanding our toolchain to support…

SAFE: Bringing Real Static Analysis to the BEAM (opens on the source site)
In recent years, software security has become a hot topic due to regulatory pressure (NIS2, EU Cyber Resilience Act, etc.). Beyond regulations, software communities and open source maintainers have also put security into focus, because open source libraries are often part of commercial software supply chains. This has reached the Erlang/Elixir ecosystem as well, and that is a good thing. In this post, the SAFE team takes us through SAFE, Erlang Solutions’ security analysis tool for the BEAM, covering what it does, how it works, and what makes it effective in practice. The BEAM is secure by…

Tired of fixing endless linting errors? What if an AI could do it for you? In this post, we’ll walk through how to build a Python script that uses Google’s Gemini to automatically fix static analysis issues, exploring the process and the lessons learned along the way. This is a journey from a simple idea […] The post Linting, Automated: AI-Powered Static Analysis with Gemini first appeared on Blundell.
How to Avoid Thread-Safety Cost for Functions' static Variables (opens on the source site)
In this blog post, we’ll look at static variables defined in a function scope. We’ll see how they are implemented and how to use them. What’s more, we’ll discuss several cases where we can avoid extra thread-safety cost. Let’s start. Introduction As you may know, C++ offers a way to define static variables in a function/block scope: void foo() { static int counter = 0; ++counter; } Above, the counter variable will be initialized and created when foo() is invoked for the first time. In other words, a static local variable is initialized lazily. The counter is kept “outside” the function’s…
Static as a Server (opens on the source site)
RSC means React Server Components. And yet, although this blog is built with RSC, it is statically served from a Cloudflare CDN using their free static hosting plan. It costs me exactly zero. Zero. How is this possible? Aren’t these React Server Components? In the past, “server” and “static” frameworks were thought of as separate tools. For example, you might use Rails or PHP for a “server” app, but if you wanted to generate a “static” HTML+CSS+JS site, you might use Jekyll or Hugo instead. However, it’s getting more common for frameworks to support both “server” and “static” output modes.…

Writing a Static Site Generator Using Shake (opens on the source site)
Static site generators (SSGs) are all rage these days as people realize that plain HTML websites are good enough for most cases. SSGs take raw data in various formats—often Markdown, JSON, and YAML—and process them to produce the static websites, which can then be hosted easily on any hosting provider, or on personal VPSes. In this post, we write a bespoke SSG using the Shake build system.
Serving static files with Ktor (opens on the source site)
Serving static files with Ktor for a static website seems easy enough: fun main() { embeddedServer(Netty, port = 8080) { routing { static { files("static-data") } } }.start(wait = true) } Done? Not quite. Opening http://localhost:8080 will only get you a 404, even if you have an index.html file in the static-data folder. You have to let Ktor know you want to opt-in serving a default file. Let's try again (omitting anything outside the static block): static { files("static-data") default("static-data/index.html") } Surely now this works? Well, kind of. The root folder will have a default…
