Recursion in Python: An Introduction
Real Python
If you’re familiar with functions in Python, then you know that it’s quite common for one function to call another. In Python, it’s also possible for a function to call itself! A function that calls itself is said to be recursive, and the technique of employing a recursive function is called recursion. It may seem peculiar for a function to call itself, but many types of programming problems are best expressed recursively. When you bump up against such a problem, recursion is an indispensable tool for you to have in your toolkit. Take the Quiz: Test your knowledge with our interactive…
Operator and Function Overloading in Custom Python Classes
Real Python
If you’ve used the + or * operator on a str object in Python, you must have noticed its different behavior when compared to int or float objects: Language: Python >>> # Adds the two numbers >>> 1 + 2 3 >>> # Concatenates the two strings >>> "Real" + "Python" 'RealPython' >>> # Gives the product >>> 3 * 2 6 >>> # Repeats the string >>> "Python" * 3 'PythonPythonPython' You might have wondered how the same built-in operator or function shows different behavior for objects of different classes. This is called operator overloading or function overloading respectively. This article will help you…

A Mastodon bot powered by iOS Shortcuts
Evan Hahn
In short: I use iOS Shortcuts to run a Mastodon bot. I run a Mastodon bot that posts random quotes from The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. (The writing in that game is so charming!) I used to run it off a server, but for the past few days, it’s used an iOS Shortcut on my phone. How it works The bot is called Ulrira, named after a beloved Link’s Awakening character. Ulrira (the bot, not the character) samples a line from the text dump, then makes an HTTP request to post it. Here’s a screenshot of the full thing: As you can see, everything here is hard-coded, from the server credentials to…
