Fragments: October 4

Martin Fowler

In response to my last fragments (probably the bit about us worrying if LLMs have consciousness when we when we should be wondering why they don’t have a conscience) “Metalanguage” replied: we shipped the id and forgot the superego. classic software lifecycle. I don’t know what was on their mind, but their post immediately made me think of the classic 1956 movie Forbidden Planet. Plenty of sci-fi, and other literature, have explored humans creating technology with unintended behavior, going back at least to Mary Shelly. But that movie was particularly influential on sci-fi film-making and in…

Decision Models vs. CVE Data

Jerry Gamblin

Ollama’s new decision endpoint, Cloudflare’s Clef models on a MacBook, and two questions asked of all 27,489 CVEs published in the last 60 days: does the description say why the bug matters, and is it clear? A new, bespoke static site generator to replace Jekyll

Chris Wellons

My blog began as a blosxom (Perl) site running on a VPS. In 2011 I moved to the new GitHub Pages, with the site generated statically by Jekyll (Ruby) on a GitHub server. It was a no-brainer: easier, faster, and cheaper, better in every way. After 15 years of Jekyll, this week I replaced it with a new, custom-built static site generator, dubbed ssg, in “C with templates” C++20. The ~8KLoC source closely follows my personal coding style including templated arenas and slices, zero dependencies, and a libc-free core. It’s wicked fast, and a complete, cold generation of my blog takes 150ms on my…

Strings and Character Data in Python

Real Python

Python strings are a sequence of characters used for handling textual data. You can create strings in Python using quotation marks or the str() function, which converts objects into strings. By the end of this tutorial, you’ll understand that: The str() function converts objects to their string representation. String interpolation in Python allows you to insert values into {} placeholders in strings using f-strings or the .format() method. You access string elements in Python using indexing with square…
